Rockfish are a fish found mainly in warm waters and are very popular in the sea near Japan. Not only are they popular for fishing and cooking, but the wide variety of species available is also one of their attractions.

Rockfish (genus Scorpaena) are marine fish that belong to the family Scorpaeniidae in the order Scorpaeniformes, and are characterized by their rugged body shape and flashy patterns. They live on rocks and the seabed, and prey on small fish and crustaceans while hiding their bodies with protective coloration.

 

In Japan, they are sometimes called "gashira" or "okoze," but these are different names depending on the region and species.
